Magnetic Forces
The word 'magneto' can refer to any one of several different things. It can mean anything concerning, or related to, magnetism, or a device which creates electrical current for engine ignition. It is also the name of a character created by Marvel Comics as part of X-Men, dating back to the early 1960's. There is a Mexican boy band that goes by the name Magneto, and a song of that title by the British band Brigade.
The two references that I will briefly touch on are the ignition device and the X-Men character.
According to Sci-Tech Encyclopedia, a magneto is a type of permanent-magnet alternating current generator often used as a source of power to start engines such as marine, aviation, industrial, or even tractors. Essentially, there is a permanent magnet rotor and two windings, one which is fixed in position, and the other, which is high tension. The energy released comes from the fast rate of flow through the fixed windings. These windings have few turns in comparison to the high tension windings, which have thousands of turns of thin wire. Skipping the more advanced mechanical explanation, the end result is the production of electrical current which is used to ignite the engine's spark plugs, starting the engine.
Magneto, also known as Magnus, is also a character in the popular X-Men comics and films. He has the ability to create and control magnetic power, in order to enhance his physical strength. He can create magnetic fields, although it is not clear whether he draws the power from without himself or from within himself. He seems to be a scientific/technological genius in the areas of genetics and engineering. He has been the chief enemy of the X-Men since the beginning. In the X-Men films, Magneto was played by Ian McKellen.
