Kids and Sports

Sports can be a great way to keep your children active and healthy.  Studies show that playing kids sports, not only help to keep kids physically fit, but that they also teach children respect for other grown ups, how to win and lose well, and how to effectively interact with their peers.  Sports teach the importance of teamwork and its value in getting the job done.  There are a lot of good reasons to get your children involved in sports.

All the benefits of sports can not be achieved without the involvement of safety.  Child safety needs to be a big consideration in everything children do, especially in kids sports.  The first line of defense in safety is having the proper equipment for the sport your child is playing.  When your child begins playing a sport, you should immediately find out what kind of safety equipment they will need and make sure that you take care of this first.

Of course, playing sports, especially contact sports, there is always a risk of injury, however there are some other things that you can do to make sure that your child stays safe, while playing the sport they love.

  1. Make sure that there is always a supervising adult, overseeing and organizing activities.  At the practices there should be a coach, and at a competition, this would be a referee or umpire.  These people help enforce the rules and that makes it a safer environment for everyone.

  1. Make sure that practices and games are well structured.  If any sporting event seems like a free for all, then it is definitely more dangerous.  It may take stepping in, to help the person get control of the group, but this is necessary for everyone’s safety.

  2. Look at the field conditions and equipment.  Check for things like sharp edges, wobbly equipment that might fall, and pot holes in a field.  These are all things that potentially could cause injury and must be addressed.  Either contact your local youth league about these matters, or form a group of concerned parents, who can work together to make sure that the fields and equipment are safe for all the kids.  Many times it doesn’t take much time or money to rectify these types of problems.

Being involved and learning about the sports that your children are playing, can help you to keep your child safer.
